Bedford, located about 76 miles south of Indianapolis, was established in 1825. The city was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Bedford is known as the Limestone Capital of the World because of the numerous limestone quarries that surround this city. In fact, much of the limestone used in the construction of the Washington, D.C. monuments was quarried from the Bedford area.

US-50 goes through the city, connecting Bedford with Seymour to the east and Vincennes to the west. State Road 37 connects Bedford to Bloomington to the north and Mitchell to the south. Bedford North Lawrence High School is home of the Bisons. Students have the opportunity to participate on many sports teams including golf, volleyball, football, basketball, and soccer. There are also many extracurricular activities available, but the school’s main emphasis is on excellence in the classroom. Many graduates attend college to continue their studies.
Oakland City University has a campus in Bedford. Accelerated adult degrees in business are offered here. In addition to this, cooperative undergraduate classes are offered with Ivy Tech.
