The Blackford County Schools includes the cities of Hartford City and Montpelier, the towns of Dunkirk and Shamrock Lakes, and the surrounding areas. The district has earned an “A” for accountability from 2010-2013 from the Indiana Department of Education.

Montpelier School houses Head Start through 6th Grade. Head Start is a full-time preschool program offered through the US Department of Health and Human Services. Students have access to computer labs, two music rooms, a fully functioning media center, and one art room. The school boasts an Eight Step Process system that combines learning and instruction with state standards and assessment. The process ensures students are learning the lessons taught in the classroom.
Located on Hartford City’s south side, Southside Elementary houses developmental preschool along with Kindergarten through 3rd Grade classes. The school provide high quality literacy instruction according to the Comprehensive Literacy Model. The school is committed to intervening before students fall behind academically via the Comprehensive Intervention Model. Thus, students do not miss any classroom instruction.
Northside School, located in Hartford City, prides itself on providing an academic environment that is nurturing as well as physically and socially safe for Grades 4-6. Its goal is to encourage students to become self-directed, lifelong learners by providing quality instruction and the best technology.
This is the only junior high school serving the Blackford County area and is located in Hartford City. The school has a host of academic and athletic extracurricular activities to prepare students for high school.
Blackford High School, also located in Hartford City, is the only high school in the area. The school is designed for students in Grades 9-12. In 2009 the high school’s dropout rate was 2 percent which was well below the 2007 national dropout rate of 4.4 percent. The high school focuses on preparing students for college and a career through rigorous instruction, blended learning, and instructional leadership. It also boasts a diverse list of academic and athletic activities that allows students to explore various interests and potential careers.
The Blackford High School team is known as the Bruins. Students here have the opportunity to join a number of sports teams: golf, cross country, basketball, tennis, track, baseball, softball, cheerleading, wrestling, and football.
