James Gentry settled down in west-central Spencer County in 1818. He and his family pioneered an unsettled wooded area, and the village that he settled is named after him. As a merchant and a farmer, he employed Abraham Lincoln to help transport merchandise by flatboat to New Orleans in 1828. The Lincoln family spent their last night in Gentry’s home before leaving for Illinois in 1830.

Culture and Entertainment

Gentryville is ideally situated between three nationally known historical sites: Lincoln State Park and Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial to the east and Colonel William Jones House to the west. Lincoln State Park was originally established as a memorial to Abraham Lincoln's mother whose gravesite is now contained within the adjacent Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial.

The family of Abraham Lincoln lived in Spencer County from 1816 to 1830. The park contains numerous sites significant to this period. About a half-mile west of the town, Colonel Jones opened a trading post in the early 1800's. In 1844, the future president Abraham Lincoln gave a campaign speech at the Jones house. In recent years, the Jones House was completely restored and is now open for tours.

Little Pigeon Creek Fish and Wildlife Area is located in Gentryville. This area is part of a waterfowl management plan. When the creek is high, it floods adjoining marshes and provides excellent duck habitat. This is nature at its finest with 185 acres of unspoiled land and water. A different type of outdoor fun is waiting for visitors at Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari. This seasonal theme and water park in Santa Claus has variety shows, dining venues, and more.

Careers and Industry

Gentryville experienced industrial growth after the Civil War with the opening of stores, blacksmith shops, tobacco warehouses, a cigar factory, and a grist mill to maintain a lively business district. Today, manufacturing is the most common industry in the area with more than one-third of those employed working for manufacturing companies and about one-quarter working in the construction industry. Other common industries include retail trade; educational services; transportation and warehousing; accommodation and food services; and arts, entertainment, and recreation.

Schools

North Spencer School Corporation includes four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The corporation has been one of the Top Ten Performing School Districts in Indiana since 2009. It’s received many Four Star School Awards in the past, and it’s also been a Blue Ribbon School and received an A rating from the State of Indiana for accountability. The elementary schools provide a safe, nurturing environment in which the needs of every student are met and where success occurs. Heritage Hills Middle School prepares students to be respectful and responsible lifelong learners. Heritage Hills High School educates all students through challenging learning experiences enabling them to become successful and productive citizens.
