Fortville Elementary School is one of three elementary schools within the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation. Offering an exciting and engaging curriculum for students from Kindergarten through Grade 5, team learning and community spirit remains at the forefront of each of the classroom guidelines. The school offers extracurricular activities for each grade level, including geography and spelling bees, an art club, a choir, a writing club, and a math pentathlon.
Located in nearby McCordsville, this K-5 elementary school focuses on a standards-based curriculum. Teachers here stress the importance of math readiness and literacy skills. Students also have opportunities to join in school activities held throughout the year like movie night and participating in different fundraising events.
Students in this K-5 elementary school get a well-rounded education from dedicated teachers and staff. Teachers here incorporate technology into the classroom to teach their students real-world connections to the concepts learned in the classroom. Mt. Vernon Middle School takes advantage of a small community atmosphere for their curriculum for these Grades 6-8 students. Vernon Middle School also offers a prominent athletics department with a wide variety of school teams.
With recent renovations to provide for the growth of the student population, Mt. Vernon High School is a popular public high school for the students of Vernon and Buck Creek townships. The most recent school renovation was undertaken in 2007 and completed in 2011, allowing the school capacity to increase to 1,500 students. The new addition included ten new science labs, four art rooms, and 18 additional classrooms. A new lobby, cafeteria, music room, media center, weight room, and wrestling room were also included in the renovation.
In 2012 Mt. Vernon High School became home to the Mt. Vernon Eighth Grade Academy, and other changes were made to the school district structure. Mt. Vernon High School continues to offer a diverse curriculum for Grades 9-12 students and has a high graduation rate; its academic achievement remains high, and the school is noted for its outstanding athletics department with a wide variety of school teams. As the home of the Marauders, Mt. Vernon High recently took the state championship for their Class 3A Girls Basketball team. Students can also join other athletic teams: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, wrestling, softball, volleyball, and cheerleading. The school also offers unique, practical classes such as Drivers’ Training classes.
