The Rochester Community School Corporation is located in the city of Rochester in Fulton County, which is 46 miles south of South Bend. The district includes two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The corporation is committed to helping students develop numerous positive character traits. A few of those traits include good work ethic; compassion and caring; ability to set goals; appreciation of diversity; honesty and integrity; critical thinking; creativity; and respect for self, others, and property.
Columbia Elementary School serves Grades K–2 while Riddle Elementary School serves Grades 3–5. Teachers at Riddle Elementary School and Columbia Elementary School strive to create a family atmosphere in their classrooms. They work to give the right help to those who are challenged by the coursework, and they provide enhanced instruction for those who have met all of their goals.
Students at these schools learn through hands-on instruction, and they are often given large projects to complete. Students receive character trait instruction through such activities as a theater show called Zebra Zone. Students are encouraged to learn, grow, and give. Riddle Elementary School is a 1:1 school, providing iPads for all students to enhance classroom instruction and give opportunities for individualized academic growth.
Rochester Middle School serves Grades 6–8. The school has an innovative curriculum which includes a 1:1 technology initiative. Each student is given an iPad which provides a means for learning 21st century technology. This gives each student the opportunity to use information that supplements classroom instruction and allows teachers to provide individual instruction. Students are encouraged to join a sports team or club to complement academic pursuits. Some of the sports teams students can join are football, basketball, golf, cross country, cheerleading, or baseball team. There are other arts-related and academic-related groups students can also join as well including band, chorus, the National Honor Society, and other clubs.
The Rochester High School motto is “Education to build 21st century skills.” True to its motto, the school is a “New Tech” high school, and most of the time, students receive project- and technology-based assignments. Perhaps because of this level of dedication, Rochester High School has been named an “A” school by the Indiana Department of Education.
The school offers Project Lead The Way classes in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Dual credit courses are also offered so students can earn college credits that count toward general education requirements at colleges and universities.
Rochester High School is home of the Zebras, and the school mascot is affectionately called “Zebbie.” School sports here include football, basketball, wrestling, cheerleading, baseball, cross country, track and field, golf, tennis, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, volleyball, and wrestling.
Students can also participate in a variety of other extracurricular activities. There are many clubs available including band, art club, F.F.A., National Honor Society, School Newspaper (Zebra Tales), and many others.
