Schools and Education

The Shelbyville public schools are part of the Shelbyville Central Schools. There are three elementary schools: Coulston, Loper and Hendricks, for grades 1 to 5. Shelbyville Middle School is for students in grades 6 to 8, and Shelbyville High School serves grades 9 to 12. In addition to its regular student curriculum, Shelbyville High School partners with Blue River Career Programs to provide vocational skill training and career exploration opportunities. Students in this program attend vocational programs for half of their school day, then attend classes at their regular high school the other half of the day.

In addition to the public schools in Shelbyville, St. Joseph Catholic Church maintains St. Joseph Catholic School, which offers faith-based educational opportunities for Preschool through Grade 5.

Sports and Recreation

With Indianapolis only about 45 minutes away, many local residents take advantage of the most famous auto racing events in the country -- the Indianapolis 500. Racing fans come from all over the country for the Indy 500 as well as for the Brickyard 400.

For fans of football and basketball, the NBA's Indiana Pacers and NFL's Indianapolis Colts offer the opportunity to cheer on a national professional team. The Women's NBA Indiana Fever also call Indianapolis home. The Indianapolis Indians are a AAA baseball franchise, and the United States Hockey League's Indianapolis Ice have a winning tradition.

Blue River Park contains approximately ten acres, much of it well lit athletic fields. There are also new concession stands, parking and restrooms.

Kennedy Park features a fishing spot, a lighted softball field, shuffleboard courts, tennis courts and a basketball court. There is also a program shelter, restrooms and a picnic area with grills. In addition, there is a scenic walking bridge over the Little Blue River.

Sunset Park includes 16 acres and was recently renovated. There are large, well cared for lawns, beautiful hardwood trees, picnic tables with grills, two shelters, restrooms, playgrounds, shuffleboard courts, a half-mile nature trail, and fishing and boating access.

Sunrise Park features mature hardwoods among sprawling lawns, a concession building, shuffleboard and basketball courts, three softball fields, a playground, picnic tables with grills and restrooms.

Clearwick Park and Morrison Park both contain playgrounds, picnic tables, restrooms and other amenities.

Roger Shaw Memorial Park is a rustic, wooded area with fishing, camping, and mountain bike trails spread over twenty acres of natural beauty.

The Meridian Park Family Aquatic Center has a community pool with water slides, fountains, concessions and outdoor lighting. It's a great place to cool off during the hot summer weather.

The Carl McNeeley Civic Center is a community gathering spot with two large multipurpose rooms, a gym, and a conference room.

There are also many programs for all ages including summer day camps, adult programs, theaters, festivals and a summertime Movies in the Parkù series.

Dining and Shopping

There are several very popular local dining choices, including Linne's Bakery and CafÈ, featuring made-from-scratch pastries; Fiddler's Three; and Grandma's Pancake House and Restaurant, to name just a few.

There are a number of family-owned specialty shops in Shelbyville, and a number of national chain stores, but most serious shoppers head for the malls and shopping centers of nearby Indianapolis, such as the Circle Center Mall, the Fashion Mall at Keystone and the Southport Centre Plaza.
