Shoals Community School Corporation serves students in the town of Shoals in Martin County. Shoals is 47 miles southwest of Bloomington. The corporation, which oversees two schools, educates students in Grades K–12. The corporation maintains a Facebook page to keep parents and students informed about the latest happenings in the schools. The schools’ goal is to meet the students’ needs in a digital, high tech, constantly changing 21st century world.
Shoals Community Elementary School holds a First Class Commission from the Indiana Department of Education. The school educates students in Grades K–6. Technology is integrated into the curriculum, which emphasizes basics like reading comprehension, math, social studies, and science. Students also take fine arts classes and physical education classes. Students receive a grade in classroom academics, handwriting, conduct, personal growth, and physical education. For homework help and research, they can use the online Evergreen Library, sponsored by the Indiana Library System. Field trips are part of the elementary school curriculum, and therefore, they are an extension of classroom instruction. Extracurricular activities include basketball, cheerleading, cross country, and track and field as well as math and spell bowl teams.
Shoals Junior and Senior High School educates students in Grades 7–12. In addition to the Common Core 40 general curriculum, the school offers Project Lead the Way classes in science, technology, engineering, and math along with Advanced Placement classes such as AP calculus and AP history. Students can pursue a vocational curriculum, and they can also participate in a school-to-work program that allows them to gain on-the-job experience with a local company. Students have access to a homework hotline that provides help with math and science assignments. Like the elementary school students, they also have access to the Evergreen Library.
One of the largest STEM employers in the country, Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center, is located in Martin County. Many students have a goal of working for this employer. To meet the needs of these students who will be working with advanced technology, the school has incorporated the following into the curriculum: Google integration, classroom management software, digital textbook creation, and a widespread data management system. In addition to these technological advancements, the school works with numerous successful companies in the area to learn more about utilizing digital devices in an everyday work environment.
Students here also have the opportunity to participate in athletics. The Jug Rox teams include softball, baseball, track, cross country, volleyball, golf, basketball, soccer, and others. There are several clubs and organizations students can also join throughout the year including band and chorus, Robotix Team, yearbook, National Honor Society, Student Council, and many more.
