South Adams Schools are located in the city of Berne in Adams County. Berne, known for its large Amish population, is 35 miles south of Fort Wayne. Adams County lies in northeastern Indiana and shares its eastern border with Ohio. The district consists of three schools that educate students in Grades PK–12. The district encourages students to have the courage to reach beyond perceived expectations. Students are also encouraged to set high educational standards and have high ethical values. South Adams Elementary School serves students in Grades PK–5. Because students have different learning styles and abilities, instruction is individualized for maximum student achievement. Classes in the core subject areas of reading, English, math, social studies, and science make up the curriculum. Students also take physical education and fine arts courses as well. Instruction is meaningful and connected to prior experiences. The school has a 1:1 technology program to supplement classroom instruction. Students in Grades K–2 receive an iPad Mini and students in Grades 3–5 receive an iPad. A Parent Information Resource Center is also available to all parents. There are books, games, and other learning materials available to be checked out, and there is a computer available for parental use.
South Adams Middle School, serving students in Grades 6–8, expects students to show respect, do what is right, and do their best. The curriculum is guided by Indiana academic state standards, and it gives students the skills they will need when entering college or careers. Technology is used to enrich the learning process. All students receive a laptop through a 1:1 initiative. Middle school students, like elementary students, have access to a digital library. Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities like band, choir, basketball, and student council.
South Adams Senior High School is a Four Star school and ranked 30th in the US News and World Report Top Indiana High Schools. The school serves students in Grades 9–12. A relevant student curriculum focuses on essential skills. Types of diplomas available are Core 40, Core 40 with Technical Honors, Core 40 with Academic Honors, and General. Students can also pursue a curriculum in a vocational area, choosing from one of eighteen areas of study. Dual credit courses are also available, allowing students to earn college credits that can be used to fulfill general education requirements, and they can also take Advanced Placement courses.
The school has a 1:1 initiative, and therefore, all students receive a laptop to enhance classroom instruction as well as for personal enrichment. The laptops allow students to do homework, research, and take notes in any classroom, and they provide opportunities to use digital curriculum and resources. A media center is also available, which gives students access to computer programs, research materials, project items, and reading material.
South Adams Senior High School is home of the Starfires. Sports offerings include football, basketball, track and field, cross country, wrestling, baseball, softball, swimming, soccer, tennis, cheerleading, golf, and volleyball. Extracurricular activities include band, Youth B.O.T. robotics club, National Honor Society, FFA, student council, and yearbook.
