Homes for Sale in Stendal, Indiana

Stendal is a small, unincorporated town with approximately 550 residents, and although it is unincorporated, it does have its own post office and zip code. The town has a rich history dating back to the 1860s when it was first laid out. The town was named after a city in Germany with the same name.

This small town can be found at the southern end of State Road 257, which starts in Washington and runs 32.5 miles. Stendal is in Pike county, located southeast of the county seat of Petersburg.

Stendal has set its place in sports history as well. Former U.S. Senator, Vance Hartke started the Stendal High School basketball team by the name of “Stendal Aces.” What made the Aces famous was the fact they had no actual gymnasium in the school and were henceforth known as the “Gym-less Wonders.” Despite their lack of training facilities, the Aces went on to win three Pike County Tournaments in the late 1920s and three IHSAA sectional titles in the 1930s. And at the time they had a future Basketball Hall of Famer on their team, Kern McGlothlin. After years of playing and coaching other teams, McGlothlin later returned to his alma mater as head coach for the Aces.
