Girls, Inc. – 30 Days of Thanksgiving

At F.C. Tucker we talk a lot about “paying our civic rent,” so for the month of November, we would like to express our gratitude to the many organizations and individuals who serve their communities tirelessly and make Indiana a better place to live and work. We obviously can’t highlight everyone, but we would like to salute these 30 organizations that are making a difference.

30 Days of Thanksgiving – Day 2: Girls, Inc.

For our second day of our 30 days of nonprofit recognition, we thought we would highlight an organization that has the goal of, “inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold.”  Girls Inc. impacts nearly 4,000 girls per year with its programming and community engagement.

This nonprofit was created in 1969 when three Indianapolis mothers decided to start a club centered on female-learning for their daughters.  Over the years, this organization took on many names from the Girls Club of Indianapolis to the Girls Club of Marion County.  It was not until 1990 that the name Girls Inc. was finally adopted. Since then, Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis has continued to serve the greater Indianapolis community.

The core of Girls Incorporated’s outreach centers on their 4-6 week one-hour session programs throughout the year. Programs fall under one of three main themes: Strong Healthy Relationships, Smart College & Career Planning, and Bold Empowered Girls. Programs topics cover everything from economic literacy to adolescent pregnancy.  A complete list of programs can be found on their website under the “Our Programs” page.  Last year, Girls Inc. Indianapolis served 3,981 girls, offered 432 programs, and utilized 220 volunteers.

It is worth mentioning that nearly all their programs are led by volunteer facilitators at partner facilities around the Indianapolis area.  Each partner location has its own selection process for participants.  Some partners are schools and therefore only offer the service to their students, but others such as community centers, offer open enrollment.  All the details concerning the various locations are listed on the Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis’ “Find Us Near You” page.

Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis’ outreach, however, does not stop there.  They also offer several special programs throughout the year to encourage girl empowerment.  One of their most popular events is Girls Inc. Day.  This year, the event falls on November 11th and will take place at IUPUI’s School of Informatics and Computing.  At this event, girls will take part in STEM-centered activities and will get a chance to explore STEM careers. Other events throughout the year include Girls Inc.’s Summer Day Camp series for girls ages 6-14 and their Young Women in Leadership Program for girls in grades 9-12.

Clearly, Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis is working tirelessly to, “inspir[e] all girls to be strong, smart, and bold.”  We, at F.C. Tucker, are cheering on their efforts and look forward to seeing all they do in the future!
