The Humane Society of Indianapolis (HSI) was founded in 1905 by a group who wanted to make a difference for those who were suffering – not only for animals, but also for women and children of abusive marriages and relationships. Over the years, the HSI has grown to focus on dogs, cats, and other domesticated pets. The current facility was built between 1989 and 1991 – with capacity for 300 dogs, cats, and small mammals.

The Humane Society for Hamilton County (HSHC) was founded in 1984 as a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization. The HSHC has an open admission policy and a No-Kill philosophy. Each year, more than 3,100 animals come into the facility and they have maintained a 98% placement rate over the last 3 years.

The mission of Southside Animal Shelter is to rescue dogs and cats who are at risk, and to bring them to loving homes. The shelter started when executive director, Rosie Ellis was rescuing stray kittens in her home in 1987. After receiving a 501(c)3 status in 1995, she was able to starting building what is now known as Rosie’s Southside Animal Shelter.
Lucky Dog Retreat

The Lucky Dog Retreat is known for its doggy daycare facility, but it also is home to a rescue retreat for dogs. The dogs up for adoption all came from a kill shelter, are spayed or neutered, are completely vaccinated and microchipped. To date, Lucky Dog has saved 949 dogs, surviving solely on private donations and fundraisers.

Sacred Sycamore has a goal to not only place animals in homes, but to find the perfect home and family the first time. Animals are placed in a safe and secure internal shelter with access to external space as needed. Adoptive families go through an education and interview process as well as a follow-up home visit. The pets up for adoption are often brought to special events, and the rescue can also arrange a meet and greet with the animal that you are interested in adopting.

The facility is being developed in phases, with a goal to build a permanent facility so that it may hold more animals and develop a garden area with a walking path.

The center’s goal is to find permanent safe and loving homes for animals in their care. This 501(c)3 organization began in 1977 and also hosts annual low-cost vaccination clinics with local veterinarians to provide pet owners with affordable vaccines.

To prepare the animals, they are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, treated for fleas and worms, microchipped, and trained as needed.

Frenzy Animal Rescue has been rescuing dogs for over 10 years. Located in New Palestine, their mission to help end the overpopulation of dogs and cats by spaying and neutering before adoption. Hope Marie’s Fund is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization and was started in 2011 by Dr. Cindy Baker O’Dell. The original goal of the organization was to help owners pay for medical care for their pets but it quickly became a full-blown animal rescue. Today, Hope Marie’s Fund is a rescue that serves dogs, cats and small animals that have been surrendered or abandoned or orphaned and are at risk of euthanasia.
