Where to Go to Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr Day in Indiana

Every year on the third Monday of January, we take a day to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. –
a man who changed history by standing up for justice, equality, and peace. This holiday is more
than just a day off; it’s a chance to remember what he stood for and think about how we can
carry his vision forward.

Dr. King’s leadership during the Civil Rights Movement had a huge impact on America. He
fought against racism, worked to end segregation, and pushed for voting rights — all through
peaceful protests and powerful speeches. Because of his efforts, laws like the Civil Rights Act of
1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 became a reality, changing the way this country treats
its citizens.

MLK, Jr. Day is also a call to action because it isn’t just about remembering the past but also
about looking ahead. Dr. King once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What
are you doing for others?” That’s why so many people use this holiday to give back, whether
volunteering, helping a neighbor, or finding ways to make a difference in their community.

If you’re in Indianapolis and looking for ways to celebrate on or around Jan. 20, 2005, you’re in
luck. The city is buzzing with events that honor Dr. King’s legacy. Below are a few great ways to
get involved on or around Indy.

Attend Workshops and Worship at Phillips Temple C.M.E. Church

From 10 AM to 1 PM on Monday, Phillips Temple C.M.E. Church will host workshops focused
on Dr. King’s principles of nonviolence and individual expression. They will be creating vision
boards inspired by his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. This family-friendly event encourages
participants to reflect on their personal dreams and how they align with the values of equality
and justice. Following the workshops, there will be a worship service and a free community
lunch, so you have a chance to connect with others in a shared celebration.

Participate in the Wreath-Laying Ceremony at Monument Circle

On Friday, January 17, at noon, a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Soldiers and Sailors
Monument honors Dr. King’s life and legacy. This evening event is a time for community
members to come together and reflect on the sacrifices made by Dr. King and others in the civil
rights movement. For 34 years, the ceremony has offered a poignant reminder of the ongoing
