How to Find Waterfront Homes in Indianapolis

Indianapolis may be the largest city in the U.S. without a navigable body water, but that’s not to say our fine city is without water. Based on what you’re looking for in terms of a waterfront home, we may just have it!

What do you want from a waterfront home?

When working with your licensed REALTOR, be prepared to give as much information about what exactly you want and need in your next home—especially if a body of water is on the priority list.

Your Indianapolis real estate agent will want to understand what draws you to the water:

  • Do you want to use a motorized boat?

  • Must you have your own dock?

  • Do you plan to water ski?

  • Is it a nice place to fish you seek?

  • Does a water view sound about right?

  • Do you prefer a private lake or can it have public access?

Different types of waterfront homes Indianapolis

Depending on your waterfront hopes and dreams, a savvy Indianapolis REALTOR knows the various waterways around town.

Let’s get motoring.

If a canoe, pontoon boat or fishing boat is your pace, many waterfront options exist in and around Indianapolis. On Indy’s northside, great homes on the water can be found on Lake Maxinhall Estates, Lake Clearwater and Lake Stonebridge. Also the White River welcomes motorized boats in certain areas (welcome to the White River Yacht Club) on the north side of Indy. Eagle Creek on the west side offers great, slow motor boating and is one of the largest municipal parks in the country.

A need for speed.

For skiers and speed seekers, Geist Reservoir on Indy’s northeast side and Morse Reservoir in Noblesville are your best bets. Both host hundreds of single family homes and condos in a wide range of price points.

Look at the view.

The Canal through Indianapolis provides a beautiful backdrop and backyard in many parts of the city. From downtown condos, urban bungalows and neighborhood homes, the canal and retention ponds offer vistas that rival any water scene.

Gone fishin’.

Nearly all newer communities feature retention ponds as part of their overall development and environmental plan. In every price range, Indianapolis area home buyers can find a well stocked pond to offer easy access to great fishing.

A peaceful scene.

Typically found on a larger piece of property, a private lake or pond may be the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle. Your real estate professional will know exactly how to scope it out if maximum privacy in a natural setting is what’s calling you home.
