Shopping and Dining

Just as Alexandria is famous for its white picket fence image and beautiful urbanite atmosphere, it is equally popular for their American cooking. One of Alexandria’s most popular eateries is Gaither Family Resources Latte Café where they serve up amazing food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Of course, you do not want to miss The Curve Bar and Grill where good drinks are served alongside great pizza and breaded tenderloins. Nearby Anderson or Muncie are also great places to find larger varieties of cuisines.

Alexandria has an assortment of shops to help with handling those everyday needs that pop up. Hardware shops, florists, and general stores are readily available to take care of all your basic shopping needs. For items that are more specific, Anderson or Muncie are larger cities that are certain to have what you need.


Culture and Entertainment

Alexandria has a long history – a history that leaves behind a number of historic markers in this beautiful town. For example, between 1898 and June 1930, Alexandria was home to the first interurban train, which initially ran from Alexandria to Anderson. An authentic interurban waiting station is kept on display near Church and Harrison Streets, and the railway line is commemorated in the local Harrison Square. Another building of note is the Carnegie Building. This iconic building was placed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

Alexandria has a few notable people to boast. Amelia Earhart once studied here. The town is also the birthplace of two famous Gospel singers: Bill Gaither and Danny Gaither who were both part of the world famous Bill Gaither Trio. The local Alexandria airport is home to the state’s largest gliding club, The Central Indiana Soaring Society (CISS), one of the oldest clubs of its kind in the country. Between April and October, be sure to look up at the sky to take a glimpse at these beautiful motorless planes. The intense glider activity takes place every weekend when the conditions are favorable.

Every August, Alexandria plays host to a go-cart race with more than 100 racers in 18 different racing classes. The event brings crowds from all over the area to watch and participate in the local activities taking place over the fun packed weekend. The town also hosts a festival every year to celebrate its name as “The Small Town U.S.A.” Highlights of the event include craft exhibitors, musical entertainment, and a car show.

Alexandria is also host to Madison County’s 4-H Fair. Beulah Park is the main location for all your outdoor and recreational needs. The park includes two tennis court, basketball courts, and volleyball courts. The swimming pool/bathhouse complex has a wading pool, lap pool, low diving board, and a 109-foot waterslide. Alexandria also plays host to an indoor archery range and an 18-hole golf course that is open to the public. Alexandria is also uniquely home to the Largest Ball of Paint, making the town not just family friendly but also a distinctive tourist destination.


Careers and Industry

Like many of Indiana’s small towns, this area saw an economic boom with the discovery of natural gas in 1887. Today the ideal urban atmosphere is home to a combination of light and heavy industry and commercial enterprise. They are known for their production of high tech T-shirt printing, gospel music, resin patio furniture, and a mortgage origination firm that serves clientele from across the nation.
