Danville Area Homes

Danville is a smaller city on the outskirts of Indianapolis, and its quietness works to its advantage: Danville functions as a slow haven from the rigors and stress of the bustling city. A simple walk through downtown Danville will show you that this is not some town that just popped up; it is certainly well established. The downtown sector is the hub of things to do in Danville; this is where all the unique craft shops, delicious restaurants, and restored historical buildings reside.

The Danville Courthouse Square is popular for town activities. It’s here that you’ll find the Saturday morning farmers market, summer concerts, and a cruise-in the first Friday of every month from May to October. Fall brings the Scarecrow Festival, and Christmas on the Square kicks off the holiday season in late November. You might want to consider looking at houses within walking distance of the downtown area. You’ll find many great family-friendly neighborhoods where your new neighbors will become your new friends in no time.

Shopping and Dining

Shoppers can start at the Red Earth Indian Shop and then head to Carla’s Creations & Gifts to find fresh fudge, cold glass-bottled sodas, and old-time candies along with a unique shopping experience. Confection Delights offers gourmet chocolates boxes, gift baskets, and seasonal desserts. The Gallery on the Square features works by local artists selling everything from paintings to pottery, jewelry to handbags. Outta the Shed is a wonderful place if you are looking for unique furniture.

Fill your shopping bag and stroll over to the Mayberry Cafe. This well-established cafe is really a time machine and a tribute to the town that Andy Griffith called home in the popular television series of the same name. When you visit, check out the old squad car outside. Or you can grab a homemade meal at Wiggles. Cross’s Corner Bar & Restaurant is another great place to get a good meal. Located right on the downtown square, this friendly neighborhood tavern offers live music, karaoke, pool, and dancing along with a full bar and comfort food. It’s a favorite spot for nightlife in Danville.

Culture and Entertainment

Danville history has been kept alive through the preservation of numerous historical sites within the city. The Hendricks County Historical Museum is located in the former sheriff's residence and jail. The building was erected in 1866 and served as the county jail until 1974. The two-story brick structure, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the only surviving example of the Second Empire style of architecture in the county. This style was popular after the American Civil War and has the defining elements of a central tower and mansard roof. The museum's collection includes items relating to domestic life, agriculture, military history, education, and other aspects of the county's heritage.

Restoration of the courthouse interior, which was completed in 2004, provides the public a chance to view the interior decorations, woodwork, stained glass windows and murals of this important piece of Danville history in their original splendor. Both the structure and the contents of the Danville’s Community Library are of interest to those in search of local history.

In addition to historical sites, there are two parks in town for everyone to enjoy. Ellis Park is located near downtown Danville boasting woods and trails and consists mainly of recreational areas. Blanton Woods Nature Park showcases upland forest, open meadows, and a lower floodplain.

Careers and Industry

Construction is the most common industry in Danville. Other common industries include retail trade, manufacturing, public administration, transportation and warehousing, administrative support, and waste management service. Hendricks Regional Health is one of the top healthcare providers in the area that employ a large number of people.

Danville Community School Corporation includes four schools: North Elementary School (Grades K-2), South Elementary School (Grades 3-4), Danville Community Middle School (Grades 5-8), and Danville Community High School (Grades 9-12). Danville Community Schools offers a wide variety of programs for its students. They range from Special Education to Gifted and Talented. An alternative school is offered for those students who would benefit from this type of environment. The school district's central location offers easy access to higher education, cultural experiences, entertainment, and recreation.

At the elementary level, the emphasis is on reading, math fact fluency, building background knowledge in the content areas, critical thinking, and problem solving. The main goals at the middle school are to support high student achievement; support safe, healthy, and caring schools; promote effective use of resources; and promote itself as a high-performing school. High school staff members work hard to provide a well-rounded education for all students and prepare students for whatever paths they choose after graduation.
