Evansville was founded in 1812 and has become the cultural, commercial, and medical hub of southwestern Indiana and the Illinois-Indiana-Kentucky tri-state area. It is the third largest city in the state of Indiana. Evansville is often referred to as “River City” because its location in a U-shaped bend on the Ohio River. There is immediate access to all major forms of transportation, and this allows the town to be part of the global economy.  It has an excellent road, rail, water, and air transportation system for ease of movement by both residents and visitors.

Evansville Area Homes

Evansville has thirteen neighborhoods that have qualified for the National Register of Historic Places. With so many different styles and price ranges of homes, there are plenty of interesting neighborhoods where you are sure to find exactly what you are looking for.

 

Shopping and Dining

If you love to shop, Evansville is the place for you. The Eastland Mall has over 130 shops and restaurants, ranging from budget boutiques to high-end chain stores. In downtown Evansville, you’ll find antique, gift, and specialty shops. While shopping, take time to savor the delicious aromas escaping from the neighborhood restaurants. More than 60 shops and eateries are found on historic Franklin Street, and many other shops dot the area as well.

There are many types of restaurants where you can find your favorite foods or try something new like Amish, German, Irish, Greek, seafood restaurants, barbeque joints, breweries, other local flavors, and coffeehouses. Evansville has a restaurant for every taste and cuisine.

 

Culture and Entertainment

There are numerous entertainment venues in Evansville. The Victory Theater is home to the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. The Ford Center is a multi-use indoor arena located downtown. Special events are held at an auditorium at The Old National Events Plaza, also located downtown. The Evansville Civic Theatre is a community theater that stages many plays.

The University of Evansville is home to a prestigious theater program. Bosse Field, built in 1915, is a baseball stadium located in Garvin Park.

There are numerous museums in town, including the Reitz Home Museum, The Evansville African-American Museum, The Children’s Museum of Evansville, and the Evansville Museum of Arts, History, and Science. The Mesker Park Zoo is also located in town.

 

Careers and Industry

From the beginning, Evansville was a thriving commercial town with an extensive river trade. After the Civil War, the town was a major stop for steamboats, and it was home port for many companies who conducted business via the river. Today, it’s still an ideal location for the transport of cargo including international transporation.

The economy in this tri-state region is known for its stability. Several New York Stock Exchange companies as well as companies traded on the NASDAQ are located in Evansville. The largest industry sectors by size in the city are healthcare, finance, education, and manufacturing. Other major industries are energy, warehousing and distribution, and retail.

 

Schools

There are 43 elementary schools, 10 middle schools, 11 high schools, and 6 other schools located in Evansville. Of these schools, 39 of them are in the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation. Five of these are specialized schools: New Tech Institute, Early College High School, Virtual Academy, STEM Academy, and Academy for Innovative Studies. The Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center is available to students from five different counties. The school corporation sponsors two charter schools, one at the high school level and one at the elementary/middle school level.

Many opportunities are available for students in the school system. The Medical Professions Academy is open to all freshman high school students who want to pursue a career in health care or medicine. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a liberal arts program for high school junior and seniors. The IB program is one of only 18 in the state of Indiana, and it gives students a foundation in collegiate liberal arts preparatory classes, a global view of the world, and an opportunity for advanced college placement. The school corporation wants students to excel and provides many programs to fit various learning styles and abilities.

Three institutions of higher learning are located in Evansville. The University of Evansville is a small, private university. The University of Southern Indiana is a public university with a comprehensive curriculum and a growing population. Other campuses in the city include the Indiana University School of Medicine-Evansville, Ivy Tech Community College, ITT Technical Institute, and Harrison College.
